An anti-capitalist feminist conference

A one-day anti-capitalist feminist conference in London, including workshops, panels,
films, and exhibitions. Called by Feminist Fightback, this conference will involve the
collaboration of a host of different groups and individuals; including activists from the
Anarcha-Fem Collective, Black Women's Rape Action Project, English Collective of
Prostitutes, Feminist Activist Forum, Feminist Fightback, Left Women's Network, London
Pro-Feminist Men's Group, London Third Wave Feminists, Permanent Revolution, Women
Against Rape, and others.

The FAF feminist history group will participate with a project collecting the oral
histories of women involved in Outwrite, the radical, anti-imperialist newspaper which
ran from 1982 to 1988. We hope to have the first stage of a visual exhibition ready for
the February conference.

"We are feminists who have come together from a number of groups to organise an event
in February 2009. We are excited and energised by the current resurgence in
feminist activism in the UK , but we think that the kind of feminist movement we
build and the kind of politics it has, matter.

We are committed to an anti-capitalist feminism which sees the interconnections
between all struggles against oppressions and against capitalism, and we want to
build an event that creates an open space to discuss this and develop our ideas. But
we don’t want to just talk about our politics – we want to fight to actually
change the material conditions of women’s lives, to fight misogyny and our own
exploitation, and to involve as many women and men as possible in the campaigns that
will be at the centre of this event.

We want the joint event to provide us with a forum to come together, participate in
open debate, develop strategies to work towards our common aims, network, make
alliances and inspire each other to build a strong and active feminist movement.
We need to unite to challenge women’s oppression and exploitation. We want to
fight for the rights of all women - and that includes the rights of sex workers and
‘illegal’ migrants.

We organise using non-hierarchical, consensus-based decision making. We recognise
the power structures that exist among us, based on the inequalities of our society,
which amplify some voices and marginalise others, and we will actively work to
confront them. Decisions are taken at monthly meetings, which are open to feminists
of all genders. There’s also the option to work autonomously in self-defined
groups (e.g. women-only). We respect the fact that women have a diversity of
experience and we see this as positive in that it enables us to learn from each other.

Key issues on which we want to organise include…

•Defending and extending reproductive freedom.

•Opposing rape and sexual abuse.

•Fighting racism and immigration controls.

•Building solidarity between women workers.

•Challenging all forms of heterosexism and increasing our freedom of sexual expression.

•Struggles against capitalist exploitation.

Monthly Meetings are held at the Arbour Community Centre, 100 Shandy Street, Stepney
Green, London. Free creche usually provided. Contact Rebecca on 07971719797 for
directions, creche bookings, and further info. Meetings open to all.

Pogo Cafe Film 7pm
Film: The Wobblies

“Solidarity! All for One and One for All!” With that slogan, the Industrial Workers of
the World, aka the Wobblies, took to organizing unskilled workers into one big union and
changing the course of history. Along the way to winning an eight-hour workday and fair
wages in the early 20th century, the Wobblies were one of the few unions to be racially
and sexually integrated and often met with imprisonment, violence, and the privations of
prolonged strikes.

This award-winning film airs a provocative look at the forgotten American history of this
most radical of unions, screening the unforgettable and still-fiery voices of Wobbly
members–lumberjacks, migratory workers, and silk weavers–in their 70s, 80s, and 90s.

Eerily echoing current times, THE WOBBLIES boldly investigates a nation torn by naked
corporate greed and the red-hot rift between the industrial masters and the rabble-
rousing workers in the field and factory. Replete with gorgeous archival footage, the
film pays tribute to American workers who took the ideals of equality and free speech
seriously enough to die for them.

Directed by Stewart Bird and Deborah Shaffer, THE WOBBLIES is a rare and challenging
invitation to rethink both past and present through the eyes of an organization largely
omitted from memory."

Tuesday 17 February 2009

7.30 pm at LARC, 62 Fieldgate Street, London E1 1ES.
meeting about a radical history project on resistance in detention,
called by London No Borders

Why write a radical history?

Radical history is told by and from the point of view of those on the wrong side of
the
border, to remember and celebrate the otherwise untold story of what they learned,
achieved and sacrificed. Its purpose is to inspire and encourage those engaged in
similar struggles with pride in a shared history and to pass on lessons learned. The
questions it asks are different to those of mainstream history because it reflects
different interests. It perceives the so-called powerless majority as agents of
questions it asks are different to those of mainstream history because it reflects
different interests. It perceives the so-called powerless majority as agents of
historical change rather than as passive subjects.

Scope and structure of the project

The project will involve discussion groups, building an archive through research, and
producing a record. It aims to involve as many people as possible who took part in or
witnessed the protests. It will record the main UK detention centre struggles of the
last decade, including Campsfield 1998, Yarl’s Wood 2002 and Harmondsworth 2006.
However, there is no limit to the themes and subjects that can be covered, depending
on
people’s interests.

Finally, some general questions to get thinking about….

·       Riots, disturbances and uprisings: the function of words in recording
resistance
·       Why were those particular forms of protest chosen?
·       How did detainees draw on traditions of struggle in their home
countries during
the protests?
·       What is the relationship of detention centre protests to the ‘social
movement’?
·       How are narratives of resistance passed on within detention centres,
prisons
and affected communities?
·       How did protestors organise?

and affected communities?
·       How did protestors organise?
·       What worked and what didn’t?
·       Is it valid to draw parallels between the detention centre protests
and the prison riots of the 1980s and 90s?
·       Is there a political difference between immigration and criminal
detention?

7pm Housmans Bookshop talk and book launch. Campaign against Climate Change
presents: 'Too Little, Too Late: The Politics of Climate Change' with Colin Challen MP

Challen has been the most outspoken parliamentarian on the issue of climate change, and
will be discussing the political dimension of this issue, as covered in his latest book.
Too Little, Too Late: the politics of climate change' asks why tougher policies are not
being followed to tackle climate change and presents the arguments for the first time
from the perspective of an elected politician. Challen condemns the inability of
political parties to form a consensus around a meaningful response and suggests ways
forward.

He believes that action will need to be bottom-up as well as top-down but fears
catastrophe may play a role in shifting policies to a level adequate to the task. He
warns against 'displacement' activities, such as building a new fleet of nuclear power
stations, and calls for a massive expansion of renewable energy as well as personal
carbon allowances.

Colin Challen is that rare animal: a brave, intelligent, parliamentarian who seeks no
patronage. It takes courage to challenge your own government, let alone point out to the
public, during a recession, the steps individuals must take if climate change catastrophe
is to be avoided.

This evening Colin will be discussing the political dimensions of climate change, as
covered in his latest book. This event is hosted by the Campaign against Climate Change.

FEBRUARY FREESCHOOL WEEKENDER

20th - 22nd February 2009

A weekend of workshops, discussions and skillsharing to promote free,
community organised learning.

London FreeSchool aims to confront the
hierarchy and inequality that dominates learning. It stems from a belief
that the control and institutionalisation of education is wrong and as
communities we need to reclaim knowledge in order to develop self
reliance. It is a collectively run project open to all, in fact we are
actively seeking new bodies who want to get involved and help organise
similar events to this. If you are up for this then please get in contact
(deschooling_society [at] riseup [dot] net).

Check the website http://londonfreeschool.wordpress.com from now onwards
for more information on what is planned for the weekend. We hope to have
all the descriptions for workshops up as soon as possible and the full
timetable will be posted around the 13th February.

BONUS FOR IRENE by Helke Sander, 1971

A BONUS FOR IRENE (EINE PRÄMIE FÜR IRENE)
1971, DVD, 60 min, b/w, German with English subtitles
DIR Helke Sander; CAST Gundula Schroeder, Sarah Schumann, Helga Foster

A BONUS FOR IRENE portrays the hardships of a single working mother with two
children. Her encounters with men are more than disappointing, they are in
control of the factory, their workplace, but weak, boring, and clueless when it
comes to women. “Women workers unite”, seems to be the theme of this film,
one of the earliest German feminist documents.

Helke Sander was born in Berlin in 1937. From 1966 to 1969, she studied at the
newly founded Deutsche Film und Fernsehakademie in Berlin. An active feminist,
Sander’s work is very closely linked to her political commitment. Her films
include BREAK THE POWER OF THE MANIPULATORS (1968), A BONUS FOR IRENE (1971),
THE TROUBLE WITH LOVE (1983), LIBERATORS TAKE LIBERTIES (1991), and IN THE
MIDDLE OF MALESTREAM (2005).

We will also be showing three early Helke Sander short films. Sander's films
are hardly ever shown anywhere, so we are happy to put some of them on for
free.

GOOD MORNING, NIGHT (BOUNGIORNO, NOTTE)

Chiara leads a quiet life. She works as a librarian, is recently married and has moved into a new apartment with her husband. At that that’s how Chiara wants to be seen. What nobody knows, is that she is a member of one of the world’s most feared terrorist groups who have kidnapped the President of their country and are holding him hostage in their basement.

Such is the ingenious premise of Mario Bellocchio’s new film Good Morning, Night, which has its UK premiere at the 2003 London Film Festival. Already hailed in Italy, where it won a number of prizes at the Venice Film Festival, the film depicts real-life events in Italy in 1978 when the Red Brigade kidnapped and eventually murdered the then Prime Minister. Aldo Moro’s death may not have resulted in a change - Italy’s post-war electoral instability lasted well into the 1990s - but it was a defining moment for Italians that lived through it.

London Coalition Against Poverty:
Gatekeeping Roadshow Planning meeting – 2.15-5pm at the Arbour Centre, 100 Shandy Street
on the Ocean Estate, opposite Stepney Green tube station.

The HPU WG is planning a Gatekeeping Roadshow. (Gatekeeping is the tactic that councils
use to meet their homelessness targets – ie by discouraging people from making an
application for housing as a homeless person.) LCAP has been challenging this practice at
the Hackney housing office for the past year. Now we want to spread the campaign to other
parts of London – by visiting every housing office in Inner London, providing advice on
legal rights, compiling information on gatekeeping experiences and publicising the
practice – and we intend to finish the Roadshow with a demonstration.

We hope that the Roadshow will bring an increase in the number of people affected by gatekeeping contacting us for help to fight back. We want to be ready for this, involving mean more people with training in organising and participating in Direct Action.

People are needed to network, produce publicity, fundraise, research, staff the office and many other exciting and fulfilling activities.

The Freethought History Research Group

The Freethought History Research Group was founded to encourage interest and research into the neglected field of the history of atheism, infidelity, secularism and related subjects.

The FHRG group publishes pamphlets, many of which have been out of print for decades. Authors include GW Foote and Thomas Paine. Two pamphlets are published a year, and members receive a copy as port of their subscription.

The group also publishes an annual journal; hopefully it will eventually appear bi-annually. Again, members receive this on publication. Members are invited to submit articles and reviews for publication.
